An 18th century country house set in the rolling limestone hills famously known as the Crete Senese, Villa Le Focaie is a warm and welcoming Tuscan hideaway ideally located for touring the regions to the south of Siena. Tiled floors and high ceilings, fully air-conditioned. Although life at Le Focaie typically centres on a lovely loggia facing the swimming pool and furnished as an outdoor living area and dining room. Medieval towns and villages of every shape and size are liberally sprinkled throughout this area, which is well known for a variety of wines, food and crafts. The owner of the property, a very well-known jockey and long-time record-holder at the Palio of Siena, keeps thoroughbred horses at a stable nearby and in the meadows around the property.

Asciano, 5km/3 miles from the property [with the nearest shops], lies at the heart of the Crete Senese, an area known for its starkly beautiful scenery. A very scenic road leads south-west from Siena, 25km/16 miles, through Asciano to the magnificently sited Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, 13km/8 miles, an active monastery with gorgeous frescoes and a Renaissance library. Further south are Pienza, a failed Renaissance utopia, and the medieval hill towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano, all about 45 minutes.

An open lawned garden studded with umbrella pines and bordered by working farms. The swimming pool, 7 x 14m/23 x 46 feet, which has a diving board, is set on a sunny stone terrace about 10m/30 feet from the villa. Please note that this is very much a country setting with horses, dogs, cats and other animals around.
Assistance is provided locally by the property's very helpful caretaker, who lives on the lower ground floor of the house with a separate entrance and garden; he speaks very little English. Services included in the rental fee, and optional services available, are noted under Price and Availability.
