To coincide with Women’s Day, March in Italy is a time for giving. A cherished tradition involves gifting women with yellow Mimosa flowers, symbolising respect and solidarity.
Annually, Rome pays tribute to its iconic emperor, Julius Caesar, through a celebration that unfolds in the historical Roman Forum. For those seeking a more active experience, the annual marathon dedicated to Caesar’s honour is an exciting opportunity. Embark on a challenging 42km course that winds through landmarks across the city, including the Vatican and Colosseum, for a unique perspective of Rome’s rich history and iconic sites.
Not to be confused with the renowned Palio di Siena, the Palio di Somari takes the stage in the medieval Torrita di Siena. Dedicated to the patron saint of woodworkers, Saint Joseph, this event sees racers trade the customary Palio horse for a more unconventional competitor — the donkey. Immerse yourself in the festivities with medieval dances, flag-throwing contests, vibrant parades and banquets.
Central Italy is one of the best places to visit in March, especially for exploring the beautiful great outdoors. Enjoy exploring the walking and cycling routes through Umbria, Italy’s Green Heart, and the breathtaking world heritage sites of Tuscany, like the Crete Senesi. Make the most of fewer crowds by visiting Florence’s iconic museums and by touring world-class wineries in the Chianti hills. Truffle season lasts from mid-December to mid-March. A great family-friendly activity, join a local hunter and his faithful dogs in a truffle hunting experience in the Umbrian hills. Veneto is also an ideal destination for outdoor lovers, with several regional parks to choose from and the beautiful lakes, Lago di Garda and Lago di Como, on the doorstep.
Easter takes place on March 31st this year and is a very special holiday in Italy. The end of Lent is met with fireworks, parties and processions from Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome to Saint Mark’s Square in Venice.
In Florence, Easter Sunday comes alive with the annual Scoppio del Caro (“Explosion of the Cart”). This historical tradition features 150 white oxen pulling a 30ft antique cart filled with fireworks to the Piazza del Duomo. The procession, accompanied by soldiers, musicians, and Florentines dressed in medieval attire, culminates in a spectacular firework display set off by the Archbishop of Florence, who lights a mechanical dove connected to the cart after Easter Mass.
In the charming town of Sinalunga, located south of Siena, a slightly sweeter tradition unfolds with the Sagra del Ciambellino, also known as the “Festival of the Little Donut'', dedicated entirely to this local treat. Indulge in the delightful mini-doughnut, Ciambella, either soaked in a glass of Vin Santo or paired with a coffee.
Meanwhile, in the picturesque region of Umbria, towns like Montefalco and Gualdo Tadino host live passion plays on the evening of Good Friday. This spiritual region becomes even more popular with pilgrims during Easter, and the medieval centres of Orvieto and Assisi come alive with beautiful torchlight processions.
The first hints of Spring also mark the arrival of exquisite seasonal vegetables including leeks and purple artichokes. Spring is also the season for the best asparagus, which makes an amazing ingredient in risotto or served crisp with local parmesan. Meanwhile citrus, apples, spinach and celeriac mark the transition from hearty winter comfort dishes like Ribollita to a fresher, lighter summer palate.
If you are planning to spend Easter in Italy, roast lamb is a popular dish throughout the country, served in Tuscany and Umbria with lemon and extra-virgin olive oil.
However, the true stars of the season are the country’s myriad sweet treats, from traditional chocolate eggs to delightful breads and cakes. In Tuscany, the Colomba di Pasqua takes centre stage — a sweet bread similar to Panettone, adorned with candied peel, almonds and pearl sugar, shaped like a dove. For a Tuscan twist on Hot Cross Buns, Pan di Ramerino, featuring fruit and rosemary, pairs perfectly with freshly brewed coffee.
Venture to Umbria and savour the Ciaramicola, a lemon spice Easter cake from Perugia, topped with meringue and sprinkles. Elevate your villa rental experience by participating in an in-villa cooking class, where you can master the art of crafting these specialities before indulging in a feast prepared by one of our private chefs.
In Veneto, Spring heralds Prosecco season — a perfectly celebratory drink for the occasion. Elevate your festivities with a private sommelier-led Prosecco or Vin Santo tasting arranged by our Concierge Service, to help wash down your Easter sweet treats.

In March, Italy experiences the gradual transition from winter to spring. Outdoor lovers, ready your walking boots and a light waterproof jacket. With the sun gracing most days, it’s an ideal time for exploration, however, a light rain shower here and there is not uncommon.
If your villa rental is in Veneto or along the Tuscan Coast we recommend sticking to the comfort of your private heated swimming pool rather than venturing into the sea just yet. In Venice and Verona, anticipate average daytime highs of 13℃ (55℉) with nighttime lows of 5℃ (41℉). In Tuscany, temperatures can reach 15℃ (59℉) during the day, with overnight lows of 9℃ (48℉).
Umbria is a sunny haven to explore in March and early April, with just 9 days of rainfall, on average. Expect daytime highs of 14℃ (57℉) and a low of 4℃ (39℉) overnight, making it an inviting region for outdoor activities and a delightful spring getaway.
