Sustainable villas in Italy

At Tuscany Now & More we take pride in providing a quality, tailored service. Our beautifully restored villas preserve local heritage and histories, repurposing rustic farmhouses, grand villas and estates so they can be enjoyed for generations to come. Each of our villas are locally run and staffed, and someone from our small team with knowledge of the area, visits and stays in every property we list.

However, we know that as far as curating sustainable holidays goes, there is plenty more we can do to live a little greener. While many of our properties at Tuscany Now & More have been restored, what sets these particular eco-friendly villas apart is their use of sustainable materials throughout the renovation project. Our hand-picked sustainable villas in Tuscany and Umbria have a much lower environmental impact, championing clean and renewable energy as well as other ecological benefits. For a luxury holiday with a small carbon footprint, our sustainable accommodation ranges from contemporary solar-powered villas to eco-farmhouses that grow their own organic produce.

Guests staying in sustainable villas have free use of our concierge service for pre-trip arrangements, and an emergency number available 24/7 while you are in-destination. Your concierge can arrange a private chef, maid services, or shopping delivered to your villa, and memorable experiences like Tuscan cookery classes and organic wine tastings in your holiday rental’s kitchen. They can book you a table at the finest local restaurants or advise on local day trips and tours — it’s all part of our award-winning service.

Renewable Energy

Our eco-friendly villas sleep 6 to 14 guests and all have their own sustainably heated and cleaned, private swimming pool. Our sustainable villas, like Granaio Lavandoloso, are entirely solar-powered, while others are partially solar-powered, relying on solar thermal systems or energy-efficient heat pumps to warm their pools.

Podere Brogi is a lovingly restored Tuscan farmhouse in the Chianti hills, which runs entirely on green energy and has a saltwater infinity pool — a more environmentally friendly alternative to chlorine. Vernine, a stone-built farmhouse in the Val d’Orcia, is also implementing renewable energy solutions through the use of geothermal systems, photovoltaic panels and rainwater tanks.

Innovative Air-conditioning

All of our sustainable villas have innovative renewable air-cooling systems, a greener way to keep you cool on a sultry summer evening in Tuscany or Umbria. At Podere Brogi, the suspended ground floor allows air to circulate and windows have thermal and acoustic insulation. Each of our sustainable villas use creative alternatives to help keep cool in the summer and cosy in the winter.

Farm to Villa: Organic Produce

The locally-based owners of our sustainable villas all share ecologically and environmentally conscious values, which is why many of them grow their own produce. Of course, this kind of self-sufficiency and respect for the natural landscape is worth celebrating. From organic vegetable patches, fruit trees and olive groves at Il Soldano, to hillside villas set in their own small natural wine estate, there is plenty of seasonal, home-grown produce for you to taste. Podere Brogi is nestled within a 5-hectare wine estate, growing organic Sangiovese and Merlot grapes, as well as producing extra-virgin olive oil.

At Santa Dieci near Siena, the owners live and breathe sustainability and adopt a lifestyle that is very much attuned to the natural environment. They curate a number of in-house experiences for guests to enjoy, from what it means to make ‘natural’ wine, to cooking classes and tastings focused on the seasonality of ingredients and respect for nature. Their focus on re-use and recycling doesn’t just apply to the outdoors either, old furniture has been upcycled inside, giving the villa’s interior a stylish new lease on life for visitors to enjoy.

Getting Around in Tuscany and Umbria

If you are looking for a more eco-friendly way to travel while on holiday, all of our sustainable villas in Tuscany are within 1 to 8km from a train station, making it straightforward and accessible to reach larger cities like Florence and PisaIl Soldano and Vernine even have their own electric charging stations so you can explore Tuscany and Umbria from the comfort of your own electric car.

If you’re looking to reduce how much you drive, you’ll have no need for a car at one of our villas near villages, which benefit from some of the prettiest towns and villages in Tuscany, Umbria and Veneto right on their doorstep. Our villas near restaurants and shops equally offer all the amenities you could need within walking distance, so you can reduce your carbon footprint while supporting local businesses.

What to do in Italy: Making your Holiday a Little Greener

What to do in Tuscany

The great thing about our collection of sustainable villas is that the majority of them are perfectly placed for exploring the local area, with shops, restaurants and other local amenities within walking distance. With historic cities like Arezzo and Siena — famous for Piazza del Campo and the Palio di Siena — just a few kilometres away, there are plenty of opportunities to explore the local sites and stock up on seasonal produce at weekly markets. Our guide to The Best Farmers Markets in Tuscany and Umbria is a great resource for discovering where to find the best local and seasonal produce near your villa.

Our eco-friendly villas in Tuscany offer the perfect base for exploring the Val d’Orcia and Chianti, where you can visit small organic wineries, taste some of Italy’s most famous wines and immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery. The famous Chianti towns and villages of Castellina, Gaiole and Radda are all within easy reach. With this unrivalled countryside on your doorstep, you won’t be short of walking, hiking and cycling adventures either. Read our guide to Cycling Tuscany for all the practical advice you could need, from renting bikes to exploring the region on two wheels.

What to do in Umbria

What better way could there be to explore Italy’s ‘green heart’ than from your own green villa… and by foot. Umbria is one of the best regions in Italy for walking and hiking with its quiet winding pathways, ancient forests and mountainous terrain. The birthplace of Francis of Assisi, it is possible to, quite literally, follow in the footsteps of the patron saint of the natural environment.

Our entirely solar-powered villa, Granaio Lavandoloso, is just 20 minutes from the medieval hilltop town of Todi, where you will find a fine array of restaurants, cafes and local weekly ceramic and antique markets. This is the ideal location for outdoor lovers, who can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, rafting, cycling and truffle hunting.

Concierge service

Everyone renting a sustainable villa with Tuscany Now & More gets free, unlimited access to our renowned concierge service. If you want shopping stocked in your fridge on arrival, or a private chef to cook dinner for a special occasion, or even just tips on your local farmers market and where to find the best local and seasonal produce, just ask. Making your holiday lettings extra-special is part of our service. While you are in Italy, our 24-hour ground staff are available by phone or WhatsApp.

Checking in & out

You should check-in at your eco-friendly holiday rental between 4pm and 7pm. We can accommodate different arrival times — just communicate this in advance to our office staff. Upon arrival, the villa owner or caretaker will inspect the property with you and demonstrate appliances, equipment and utilities.

Check-out is 10am on the last day of your holiday rental. The villa owner or caretaker will arrive at 9am to settle outstanding payments, if you have any. If you want to depart earlier, please let us know in advance.

Cleaning

Both the luxury villa and your private swimming pool will be cleaned prior to your arrival. Some holiday villas have additional cleaning and pool/garden maintenance scheduled during the week. Maid service included with vacation rentals involves cleaning and tidying but does not cover making beds, kitchen cleaning, laundry or ironing. Extra services can be organised via our dedicated travel concierge team.

Bed linen & towels

Our greener holiday rentals include bed linens, bathroom and swimming pool towels for all guests. These are usually provided weekly, but it is entirely up to you how often you feel these need to be cleaned or changed. You can tailor these services to your exact requirements via our concierge.
