Civitella d'Agliano is one of central Italy’s best-kept secrets. Founded 3,000 years ago by the Etruscans, it was occupied by the Romans and altered in the Middle Ages -but virtually nothing has happened there since, beyond the construction of a small cluster of ‘modern’ shops and restaurants, and a pink town hall, on its outskirts. The old village is a maze of cobbled alleyways and steps huddled at the edge of a steep bluff; it overlooks the valley of the Tiber River which is entirely agricultural in this area and dotted with the limestone cliffs known as ‘calanche.’ No cars are permitted within the village but all the essentials are within walking distance: a wonderful restaurant and inn, the Tana de l’Istrice, owned by the local wine baron, lies two minutes’ walk away in the main square, with several small shops - a grocer’s, a butcher, a pharmacy, a post office and a pharmacy, as well as a handful of simple but good restaurants - just beyond. Winding roads lead from the village to key sights in both Lazio and Umbria within 30 minutes’ drive or less: the gardens of the Villa Lante, the ‘Monsters’ Park’ at Bomarzo and picture-perfect Lake Bolsena in the former, and Orvieto with its gorgeous cathedral and vineyards in the latter.

service comment
Excellent support from a travel company who care about their clients. More like a travel partner than a mere supplier of services.
product comment
It was a genuine Italian experience in ‘unspoilt’ surroundings. Because many adjacent properties are abandoned, the isolation and peacefulness were exceptional. One word of warning, access is via many steps which may prove challenging for people carrying heavy bags, especially when it’s hot and humid.

We have absolutely loved being in this medieval town - just wandering around the many cobbled paths and alleys. Very friendly and helpful people, good local shops and bars. The weather has been 10/10 for the two weeks. The house is lovely - unique to be in a cave, well equipped and with wonderful views from the many terraces - and so private. Favourite places: Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio, Villa Lonta, Monsters Park. Wonderful tasting menu with wine at La Tana dell'Istrice and also enjoyed Il Pirata on Lake Bolsena.

We have had a very cool week here at the villa. Exploring the area but mostly just relaxing and soaking in the views and the sunshine. Staying here for a week while winter starts to set in in Iceland was wonderful. Can't think of a better way to extend our summer. Every moment about this place, villa town and surrounding area has been fantastic. Everyone friendly and willing to help out this people that speak almost no Italian. We loved our stay. We will always think of this place and we will never forget this week (to short) that we stayed here.

A most charismatic and well equipped property ideally located for touring the region. Most unusual and cleverly designed accommodation with breathtaking views.

Had a lovely week here, very peaceful and exactly what we all needed. Would recommend La Quercia, Insomnia and Roxy's, all friendly and so cheap. Days out were exceptional - Orvieto, Bolsena, Civita and Todi was breath-taking. The villa is beautiful with fabulous views. Thank you so much to Roberta and Ilenia who looked after both the villa and us with expert care!

Unique villa set around old Etruscans caves perched on the side of a cliff in a lovely small hillside village. We loved the kooks and crannies, staircases and various terraces which can be used to follow the sun. However the layout might be a challenge for some. This region of Lazio is spoilt whilst having good and easy access to many beautiful hill towns and villages. Lake Bolsena was beautiful

Very well appointed - modern kitchen and bathrooms. Beautiful flowers in the garden. So imaginatively and well constructed. A memorable house and location. The caretakers were charming, friendly and helpful.
