Medieval Gubbio, which lies on the fringes of the Apennine Mountains in Umbria, is one of the region’s many small towns that come alive at Christmas. Not only is it home to the world’s largest Christmas tree – which won a Guinness Book of Records in 1991 – but it delivers a month-long calendar of festivities and family fun.
Towards the end of November, Tyrolean-style stalls begin to line the main Piazza dei Quaranta Martiri, open cellars welcome visitors with open arms and there are nativity scenes aplenty. The medieval setting alone is enough to enchant visitors, with its pretty cobbled streets and Gothic façades. Without the summer crowds, you’ll enjoy open cellars and charming markets at a gentler pace. Plus, there’s the added benefit of some (potential) winter sun.
Whether you’re travelling as a family with small children in tow or exploring Umbria on a festive honeymoon, Gubbio’s Christmas celebrations offer something for everyone.
The World’s Largest Christmas Tree
Spanning 450 metres, Gubbio is home to the world’s largest Christmas tree, which has been in the Guinness Book of World Records since 1991. A tremendous light display lures locals and visitors alike every year, illuminating Gubbio’s ancient, cobbled alleyways. Best viewed from above, the tree is over 750 metres high, and we recommend taking the Colle Eletto cable car right to the very top, at an altitude of 803 metres. From here, you’ll have a front-row seat of the 3,000 lights on show and Gubbio’s splendid rooftops.
Christmas Markets
From the end of November, Gubbio’s market stalls guarantee fun for all the family. Stock up on charming artisanal trinkets and stocking fillers. The Tyrolean-style stalls can mainly be found in the Piazza dei Quaranta Martiri, where you can sample local tasty treats, such as truffle-infused spreads, artisan salumi and homegrown olive oil drizzled over warm baskets of bruschetta. Between bites, you might stumble upon a spontaneous nativity scene or a local choir filling the square with carols, adding to the overall atmosphere of merriment. Afterwards, you can reset at one of many family-run trattorias bringing out the best of Umbrian food and wine.
Ride on the Gubbio Express Train
Families travelling with small children will be thrilled to hear about Gubbio’s roster of child-friendly activities. Together with seasonal music, sparkling lights and nativity scenes, the main square in Gubbio turns into a festive playground with a North Pole-themed Ferris wheel and a Santa’s sleigh. Sip on a warm cup of mulled wine while the little ones have their fun. Adults can get involved with the Gubbio Express Christmas train, an efficient but fun way to explore the city centre’s main attractions along a 7km route.
Wine Tasting and Gubbio’s Open Cellars
‘Tis the season for Gubbio’s open cellars, one of Gubbio’s most charming festive traditions. Throughout November and December, local wineries and family-run taverns throw open their doors to visitors. Jovial vintners are usually on hand to go through the production process, from grape to glass.
For those seeking a more personalised experience, our award-winning concierge can arrange private tours and tastings. This gives guests the chance to meet the winemakers behind the labels – or you can experience a bespoke tasting from one of our luxury villas in Umbria.
Live Nativity Scenes in Gubbio
Christmas events in Italy are deeply rooted in community and religious customs. Which is why the nativity scenes in Gubbio are a must-see in person. Throughout November, you’ll be treated to live productions depicting biblical scenes with some 120 life-size statues, including the San Martino Crib.
